A First-Time Gamer's Random Thoughts ...

It's been a few weeks now since we've gotten the old gang together  for some PS4 fun.  Mind you, some of us (like me, Johnny, Murda) are EXTREMELY green at this - but thankfully, we've got a couple young studs (Vern/Derek) to help us along the way.

Us rookies started out a few weeks ago with Call of Duty III, Black Ops.  We spent our first few weeks playing Zombies:

Once we figured out how to navigate - we did fairly well, by applying our own strategies -- I'd man the gate and the window, while Johnny manned the long end of the alley, etc.  This helped us to learn how/when to move, shoot, hide, run, but even then, we had soooo much more to learn.

After getting familiar with Zombies, we moved on to "Campaign" mode.

It was here that we made the greatest gains; going through multiple maps (successfully).  Our team communication got better/stronger and our abilities to maneuver became stronger.  Mind you - all of these levels were played at entry-level, recruit, or easy.

After finding successes in Campaign mode, we moved to "Nightmares".

Nightmares is basically a combination of Zombies and Campaign.  It's my personal favorite, with some very unique challenges.  Map wise, you find that you're going through some of the same maps that are in Campaign - but this time, Zombies are your enemies.  And - with Nightmares, some of the traditional COD Military leaders (Like Hendricks) turn to Zombies and fight against you.

Once Vern & Derek joined the team we began to move into more difficult terrain.  Because our team is now 5-strong, we can't do any of the preloaded campaigns (4 person max limit).  Now as we explore "Custom" mode games we see just how fast the game can move; and how accurate the enemy is.  Most important thing I've learned in this mode -- effective team communication.  If we do a good job of communicating - and leverage the experience of our senior leaders, we can go far.  However, with little or poor communication, the entire team suffers.  Stay tuned to this area, as it's my hope to one day see my name in the "winners circle".

Our newest game is called Rainbow Six Siege - which we just played for the first time this week.

This game - while tough - has proven very interesting to me.  I like it.  It has some CoD-like  qualities, but a lot of differences.  Biggest thing I've noticed is that it requires better shooting accuracy to put an enemy down.  The weapon "rises" as it fires - so you must be more accurate.  I've also noticed the map areas are smaller - which leads to very quick action.

Much like CoD - the best way to go far in Siege is as a team.  The type of team member you have depends on the mission:  Find/Destroy Terrorist.  Fine/Extract hostages.  Protect Hostages, etc, so your team is based on whether or not the mission focuses on "attackers" or "defenders" (with each one having mission-specific strengths).

So far I really like this game!  Stay tuned for updates on Siege6 - as well as CoD-III Black Ops.

Here's a few pictures of my game night setup:

65" DLP HDTV; Pioneer Receiver with Polk Audio Speakers.  Gaming station is set up in the lounge area of the basement.
My view from the Captain's Seating Area...

Controller, games - speakerphone (I think the audio bridge is better than the Sony PS headphones)

Gotta have some snacks at the ready ...

Guys - comment on the blog post, and include your thoughts on the games thus far, and post some images of your game night setup.

Looking forward to more fun nights (I've got so much learning to do, lol).
